Mirroring the Resilience of Women Migrants and Refugees Through Theoretical and Empirical Lens

Abstract

Women continue to form a greater number of migrants and refugees globally due to conflicts, disasters and wars. This paper therefore mirrors the resilience of women migrants and refugees through a theoretical and empirical review. The review was done through two theoretical lenses; the muted group theory and the symbolic interaction theory. These theories helped shed light on the refugee situation of migrant women as a muted group and meanings attached to symbols in their host communities. The empirical review shed light on building strength and resilience among women refugees, the factors that promote resilience in refugee populations such as religion and culture and the challenges faced by women migrants such as employability are reviewed. The review revealed that migrants read meanings in their host communities based on cultural, religious and social perspectives of themselves and their host community. It is hoped that this review will provide further theoretical underpinning for gender based migration studies.
